May 2021

In May 2021 Hudson + West Co. published a collection "H+W Spring 2021". For this compilation of patterns, H+W Co. drew inspiration from the comforts of home, particularly the ways so many of us have brought the outside into our interior worlds in the last year, surrounding ourselves with verdant plants and other signs of nature (Meghan & Sloane, H+W Spring 2021). In this collection of nine fresh knits for spring there is something for everyone.
My contribution to this collection was

Selima

Selima is a fresh take on the oversized sweater trend. This top-down raglan is worked in an all over lattice cable that is easy and soothing. The sleeves are balanced in a simple stockinette stitch, making the fit easily adjustable as you knit. Light, ethereal Weld makes for a delightfully wearable sweater, with beautiful drape and a lovely next-to-skin feel.

April 2021

Summer 2021 issue of Interweave Knits was inspired by a profound desire to travel. For this collection I designed

Pelagic Shawl

Inspired by the rugged beauty of the northern European landscapes and Baltic Sea coast, where I spent summers as a child, the triangular Pelagic Shawl is worked in one piece, starting at the narrowest point and growing to the opposite wide end. Cushy garter-stitch stripes are framed by interestingly textured slip-stitch colorwork pattern along two edges.

March 2021

In March 2021 Fairmount Fibers published"Spring 2021 Make-It-Now Collection" featuring stitch textures -- mesh, cables, seed, eyelets, and knit-purl combinations in embossed relief -- in light fabrics and soft colors that highlight March's transitional weather.

As March is also Women's History Month, the pattern names nod to women who've won the Nobel Prize: Grazia Deledda (Literature, 1926), Emmanuelle Charpentier (Chemistry, 2020), Shirin Ebadi (Peace, 2003), Gertrude Elion (Medicine, 1988), Ada Yonath (Chemistry, 2009), and Alice Munro (Literature, 2013).(Digital Edition of Fairmount Fibers, Make-It-Now Collection, Spring 2021). My contribution to this collection was

Elion Shawl

Feliz and Cabrito yarns combine to give Elion's ribbed and reversible cables a lofty feel and subtle coloration. Knitting begins at one narrow point and ends at the opposite edge with an openwork pattern that produces a pointed bind-off.

January 2021

In January 2021 Interweave published a magazine "Interweave Knits, Spring 2021". This issue is filled with soft pastels and gentle yarns and includes two stories: a beautiful collection of elegant, springtime sweaters and tees, and a charming selection of lacy shawls and colorful socks(Digital Edition of Interweave Knits, Spring 2021). For this collection of fifteen projects I designed

Daydreamer Tee

The Daydreamer Tee is a classic top-down raglan tee with beautiful hem detailing. The lacy mesh pattern gives the bottom of this sweater a subtle scalloped shape, and the split hem adds to the soft, breezy feel. Choose a yarn with a touch of silk for added elegance.

In January 2021, Tanis Gray (Inside Editions) introduced the official Star Wars Knitting Pattern Book - Star Wars Knitting the Galaxy - featuring 28 knits pictured in gorgeous full-color photography, Star Wars: Knitting the Galaxy includes patterns for toys, apparel, and home decor inspired by your favorite movie moments, characters (both human and alien), droids, ships, and more... perfect book for knitting fans across the galaxy.
For this collection I have designed:

The Rebel Alliance Shawl

The symbol of the Rebel Alliance brings hope to many suffering under the oppression of the evil Empire and, later, under the First Order. The Rebel Alliance crest is reminiscent of a phoenix: a three-pronged arm extending off an arch. Called a starbird, it is often seen on Rebel pilot helmets and on a ring worn by mechanic Rose Tico in The Last Jedi.
As described in the book, this exquisite lace shawl is worked flat from the top down in one piece. Wrap and turn short-row shaping is worked on a stockinette background at the same time as the beaded Alliance crest, then the pattern gently flows into the delicate beaded lace section. Beading as you go with a small crochet hook means you can add as many or as few beads as you desire.

November 2020

In November Interweave Knits published "Winter 2021" magazine. Fill your winter with the Gothic-inspired knits. For this edition I designed

Lucy Westenra's Wrap

Inspired by architecture of Gothic cathedrals, Lucy Westenra's Wrap features an engaging lace & cables & beads motif throughout (beads are optional). This wrap is worked in two identical halves and grafted in the lace pattern at the center.

November 2020

In November Interweave Knits published eBook "knit.wear Wool Studio, Vol. 9". Quick + Easy Knits does exactly what it says: It's a collection of knitting patterns that are designed to be quick and easy. The projects are simple and don't require loads of focus or experience. For this eBook I designed

Petrichor Cardigan

The double-fronted Petrichor Cardigan is perfect for wrapping up on a gray day. Although it appears to be cabled, the stitch pattern is worked using simple decreases and twisted yarnovers, with isolated purl stitches creating a texture like raindrops on dusty soil. An I-cord edging adds a sleek, polished touch to the entire sweater.

October 2020

In October Interweave Knits published magazine "Quick + Easy Knits, No. 1". Quick + Easy Knits does exactly what it says: It's a collection of knitting patterns that are designed to be quick and easy. The projects are simple and don't require loads of focus or experience. For this collection I designed

Dolomite Shawl

Wrap up in this cozy garter-stitch shawl. With nothing but knitted rows and basic increases, the body of the shawl zips right along! The lovely cable-and-lace border is a great way to try reading pattern charts.

September 2020

In September Interweave Knits published magazine "Knits Gifts 2020 Digital Edition", 23 Gorgeous Giftables. For this collection I designed

Winter Sunset Shawl

The dynamic Winter Sunset Shawl is worked back and forth in rows, beginning with a few cast-on stitches and increasing at one side to create an asymmetrical triangle. The stripes are worked in a combination of stockinette, garter-stitch, and a slip-stitch pattern using three colors of a cozy worsted-weight wool.

June 2020

In June Interweave Knits published magazine "Wool Studio Volume 8 Digital Edition". Each of the 9 designs included in this knit pattern collection embraces simplicity and harmony in every line. For this collection I designed

Macau Pullover

Relaxed and easy to knit, the Macau Pullover combines stunning lace and simple stockinette stitch with straightforward construction. Although some of the lace is worked on both right-side and wrong-side rows, the pattern is confined to a center panel to keep things easy. This top is worked back and forth in separate pieces and seamed.

May 2020

In May interweave.com published digital magazine "Interweave Knits, Summer 2020", collection of 13 Elegant Knitting Patterns. For this collection I designed

Monsoon Tee

Inspired by cool summer breezes, the Monsoon Tee is a versatile piece. It's perfect for warm summer days and can also be used as a layering piece for cooler weather. The overall fit is easy to customize thanks to the simple construction: the front and back are worked separately from the bottom up and seamed for better structure, while the neck edging is picked up and worked circularly after the shoulders are seamed. The simple boxy shape, deep side vents, and relaxed longer length work with both leggings and slim skirts.

February 2020

In February Interweave Knits published digital magazine "Interweave Knits, Spring 2020", collection of 13 Springtime Knitts in Premier Yarns. For this collection I designed

Gilt Lace Cardigan

Gilt Lace Cardigan is short-sleeved, perfect layering piece for warmer seasons, partly thanks to the cotton-linen blend yarn that it uses. This cardigan is worked back and forth from the top down with raglan shaping. The sleeves are worked in the round from the top down.

January 2020

Tanis Gray introduced the first official Harry Potter knitting book - a deluxe guide to creating over 25 authentic Harry Potter knits based on the iconic films.
Part of this collection, "Knitting Magic: The Official Harry Potter Knitting Pattern Book", is my design:

The Deathly Hallows Shawl

The Deathly Hallows are three magical objects that, according to legend, taken together grant the holder mastery over death. The Hallows are made up of the Elder Wand, the Resurrection Stone, and the Cloak of Invisibility. They are represented by a triangular symbol, first seen as a necklace worn by Xenophilius Lovegood in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1. The graphics department on the film, led by Miraphora Mina and Eduardo Lima, was responsible for developing the art for that symbol, as well as every other crest, sigil, logo, and insignia shown in the films.

A repeating pattern of Deathly Hallows symbols forms the heart of this beautiful beaded shawl. Beginning with a center provisional cast on, the shawl is worked in two halves down to the ends to create a mirror image of the pattern. The Deathly Hallows triangular symbol is formed using increases and decreases in the lace motif. Beading as you go creates the circle at the center and adds sparkle (1,000 6/0 4.00 mm silver-lined crystal beads), making this the perfect accessory for any magical event.

What is yarnQuest by Susanna IC?

I'm very excited to introduce yarnQuest, a series of exclusive knitting kits. The kits coordinate unique hand-dyed yarns and limited-edition project bags with new patterns designed by me specifically for each kit - patterns in line with the already popular Annis, Diantha, Stellaria, and Caireen. Unlike a club, yarnQuest kits are available for purchase in very limited quantities; once sold out, they will not be available ever again. Kits will be announced in my newsletter as they become available - sign up for the mailing list by clicking on the 'Mailing list' to be automatically notified of new releases.

    Why yarnQuest?

As you may already know, I'm a bit of a nomad - originally from Europe, I've lived in two European countries and five U.S. states. Thanks to all of my travels, I discovered an entire universe of indie dyers soon after I fell in love with knitting. Each dyer has a distinctive point of view and unique source of inspiration, which is reflected in the way they color their incredibly beautiful yarns. I also discovered indie sewers who make artisan knitting bags from fabrics that reflect worldwide inspiration. The one thing they all have in common is passion for yarn and color, and I created yarnQuest to be able to share their art with you.

What is in a yarnQuest kit?

  • A new Susanna IC knitting pattern, which will not be available anywhere else for minimum of six months following the release date.
  • A skein of yarn dyed in an exclusive colorway created especially for the new pattern.
  • A limited-edition project bag designed specifically for that particular kit.
  • A little surprise or two.
  • US domestic shipping and handling cost is included in the price of each kit; shipping to Canada is additional $10.

    February 2014

Hi everyone - I would like to tell you a little bit about the inspiration for my design, Blaeberry, which is a part of the gorgeous Louet North America Spring 2014 collection. The pattern includes directions and charts for a large stole worked in Louet Euroflax Lace, as well as a smaller scarf knitted in Gems Fingering. Blaeberry is all about nature renewing itself after a long winter's nap. As the ground thaws, the seeds wake up and start racing up toward the sun. They burst into millions of tiny green leaves and beautiful flowers follow soon, unfolding in an amazing variety of colors and forms.
Blaeberry by Susanna IC, Louet North America - Spring 2014, photo © Caro Sheridan
So, how does this knitted garden grow? It grows from layers of earth and seeds formed by stockinette sections in combination with a simple lace. These easy and quick-to-knit patterns form the main body of the stole and the scarf. Knitted last, the lace borders are more elaborate and feature floral shapes complete with leaves, stems, and blossoms.
Blaeberry by Susanna IC, Louet North America - Spring 2014, photo © Caro Sheridan
I love the versatility of the two sizes. I picture the linen stole as a perfect accessory wrapped around the shoulders on a summer evening just as the air starts to cool down. The merino scarf will be great for the transitional weather in spring and fall; it can also provide a shot of bright color tucked into a neckline of a warm coat in winter.
Blaeberry by Susanna IC, Louet North America - Spring 2014, photo © Caro Sheridan
I would love to see your interpretation of Blaeberry, and I hope you will share your projects with me on Ravelry.

It is hard to believe that this year is at its end. It was so busy, it was so fast and furious, and so many different events happened in my life...

Looking back, summarizing my thoughts, I decided not to talk about my projects and patterns, those can be found on pages of ArtQualia, but I want to use this time to thank all of you for your wonderful support and your interest in my designs. It was always my dream to create something that other people will enjoy. I have made many acquaintances in cyber space and I am blessed with many terrific friends and associates; your support has been inspirational and encouraging in many ways.

I especially want to thank my friends for modeling my projects and express my gratitude to all the magazines and photographers for letting me use their gorgeous pictures of my designs in ArtQualia and Ravelry. Also, I want to thank my family for their support of my work and everyday happiness they have been giving me.

Happy knitting, Happy Holidays and all the best in 2012!

New year, new start, new resolutions ...

One of my resolutions is to share design inspiration and introduce my new patterns here. I plan to construct this journal mostly in simple images because I prefer to communicate visually rather than in written word.

What better way to start this new journal than with a photograph of my Amiens design. I am thrilled and honored that this picture was chosen as the cover image of the Winter 2010 issue of Twist Collective. For more information, please click on the photo.
